Zovirax is an antiviral medication that is used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It is used to prevent the spread of the virus, which causes genital herpes. Zovirax has been approved for use in adults and adolescents and should only be used by children and adolescents under the age of 18 years. Zovirax should not be used for women or children under the age of 18 years in combination with an antiviral. The medication should be swallowed with water.

These concerns include a lack of safety information on Zovirax's mechanism of action, interactions with other medications, and potential drug interactions. The FDA states that "the most likely cause of Zovirax's side effects is a direct effect of acyclovir on the herpes simplex virus and the herpes labialis, the virus that causes genital herpes." In addition, the FDA cites an increase in reports of herpes labialis-related side effects and a link to an interaction between Zovirax and other antiviral drugs, such as ciclosporin, an antibiotic. The FDA does not recommend the use of Zovirax for cold sores or shingles.
Zovirax is not approved for the treatment of genital herpes. However, it is approved for use in the treatment of shingles and the treatment of cold sores in patients with active herpes zoster (an infection caused by the herpes virus).
